Event Deduplication

Event deduplication is the identification and collapsing of repeated events so the same occurrence is processed once.

Duplicates arise naturally: a user double-clicks a button, a webhook is retried after a timeout, or two integrations report the same signup.

Without deduplication, the same event can trigger a workflow twice, inflate conversion counts, or create duplicate records.

A practical example

Example: a purchase webhook is retried by the payment provider after a network timeout.

A deduplication rule keyed on the transaction ID processes the first delivery and discards the retry, so the customer receives one receipt instead of two.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask what the deduplication key is: event ID, transaction ID, or a combination of fields, and whether you can define it.
  • Check the deduplication window: how long the platform remembers prior events.
  • Confirm whether duplicates are dropped silently or logged for audit.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: an overly broad deduplication key can discard legitimate repeat events, such as a customer's second genuine purchase with the same product.
