Event Filtering

Event filtering is the set of conditions that determine which incoming events are processed and which are ignored before they reach a workflow.

It differs from deduplication: filtering is about relevance (should this event matter?), while deduplication is about repetition (have I seen this exact event?).

Filtering controls noise and volume; it also protects downstream systems from irrelevant traffic.

A practical example

Example: a website sends a 'page viewed' event for every page. A filter passes only events where the URL contains '/pricing', so sales alerts fire for pricing-page visits instead of every click.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether filters are defined per workflow, globally, or both, and who can edit them.
  • Check evaluation order: are filters applied before or after transformations and enrichment, which affects cost and logic.
  • Confirm whether filtered events are logged with counts, so you can audit what was excluded.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: aggressive filtering reduces noise but risks silently excluding events you later need; keep filters documented and reviewable.
