Event Streaming

Event streaming is the continuous movement of records between systems as they happen, typically through a broker such as Kafka or a vendor's managed queue.

Unlike scheduled batch transfers, a streaming pipeline emits each change — a new signup, an updated deal stage — as an individual event that downstream tools consume in near real time.

For marketing and lifecycle automation, this matters when delays of minutes or hours break the workflow, such as triggering onboarding sequences the moment an account activates.

A practical example

Example: an e-commerce team streams order events into its CRM so a post-purchase email fires within seconds of checkout, rather than waiting for a nightly batch import.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the vendor handles event ordering and duplicates when the stream retries after an outage.
  • Confirm published throughput limits and whether backpressure or throttling applies during traffic spikes.
  • Verify whether historical replay is available so a new consumer can catch up on past events.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Streaming adds operational complexity: consumers must tolerate out-of-order or repeated events, and debugging a live pipeline is harder than inspecting a failed batch job.
