Heartbeat Monitoring

Heartbeat monitoring detects the absence of expected activity rather than the presence of errors. System health checks ask whether a component responds; a heartbeat asks whether a scheduled process ran at all.

Each nightly sync or scheduled automation is expected to emit a signal on completion, and an alert fires when the signal is missing.

This catches the most damaging automation failures: silent ones where nothing failed loudly, the job simply never started.

A practical example

Example: a nightly enrichment job stops running after a credential expires. No error appears anywhere, but the missing heartbeat alert fires the next morning instead of the data decaying for weeks unnoticed.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can you define a heartbeat per scheduled process, with its own expected time window?
  • Does the alerting distinguish a missed run from a late run before paging anyone?
  • Can heartbeat alerts route to the same on-call channel as failure alerts?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Heartbeats only cover processes you remember to instrument; a job nobody registered still fails silently, and overly tight windows create false alerts when runs legitimately shift.
