Queue Depth Monitoring

Queue depth monitoring is the detection layer for event processing: it measures the count of pending events over time and alerts when the backlog grows.

Queue drain strategy governs recovery; depth monitoring is how you know a backlog exists at all, before customers notice delayed emails or stale triggers.

A practical example

Example: pending-event count climbs from 2,000 to 40,000 over an hour after a bulk import. A depth alert pages the on-call owner, who pauses the import before demo-request emails fall an hour behind.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether pending-event count is measured continuously and charted over time.
  • Confirm a depth threshold exists that pages a person, not just logs an entry.
  • Check whether alerts distinguish backlog growth rate from absolute size.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Depth monitoring detects the problem but fixes nothing: without a drain or prioritization policy, an alert just documents how late your leads were.
