Load Balancing

Load balancing is the distribution strategy that decides how per-record work is spread across available processing instances.

Horizontal scaling adds capacity; load balancing determines whether that capacity is actually used evenly or whether one hot worker becomes the bottleneck.

A platform can have many workers and still serialize work behind one of them.

A practical example

Example: a campaign launch creates a burst of 50,000 events; a platform that distributes the burst across ten workers clears it in minutes, while one that funnels it through a single worker takes hours.

What to evaluate before investing

  • How does the platform assign records to workers — evenly, by shard, or by arrival order?
  • Can one slow or stuck worker hold up records that other workers could process?
  • Does the vendor publish throughput numbers under bursty load, not just steady load?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Even distribution assumes records are independent; if some records require ordering or share state, perfect balancing is impossible and some serialization is inherent.
