Delta Load

A delta load is a transfer strategy that moves only records created or modified since the previous run, instead of re-copying the full dataset every time.

It depends on reliable change tracking in the source: timestamps, change logs, or watermarks that mark what has been touched.

A practical example

Example: a company with 800,000 CRM contacts syncs nightly to its marketing platform.

A full load would exceed the API quota; a delta load transfers only the roughly 4,000 records touched that day, finishing well inside the batch window.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the source system identifies changes: native change tracking, timestamp fields, or manual flags you must maintain.
  • Check what happens when a delta run fails midway: can it resume, or must you fall back to a full reload?
  • Confirm whether record deletions are captured, since delta loads that miss deletes leave stale contacts behind.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Delta loads are only as reliable as their change markers; a backdated import or a clock-skewed timestamp can silently omit records until someone runs a periodic full reconciliation.
