Protocol Buffers (Protobuf)

Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) is a binary serialization format from Google used when event volume makes JSON too slow or too large.

Unlike a general serialization decision, Protobuf comes with strict schemas: every consumer needs a compiled schema definition and generated code for its language.

High-volume behavioral pipelines feeding CDPs and attribution often standardize on it for speed and payload size.

A practical example

Example: your web and mobile behavioral events stream at 5,000 events per second into a CDP.

Moving from JSON to Protobuf shrinks payloads and parsing cost, but every downstream consumer — the CDP connector, an attribution tool, an internal debug script — must now compile against the same schema version.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors which serialization formats their event streams support and whether schema definitions are published per version.
  • Ask how schema evolution is handled — which field changes are backward compatible and how consumers are notified.
  • Ask what tooling exists for debugging, since binary payloads are not human-readable without the schema.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Protobuf trades human readability for performance and imposes schema discipline on every consumer; adopting it before your consumer set is stable can create codegen work in languages and tools you did not plan for.
