Protocol Translation

Protocol Translation converts communication between systems that speak different protocols, such as an older SOAP service and a modern REST API.

It changes how messages travel, not what the field values mean; reshaping values is data transformation, a separate concern.

Legacy CRM and ERP systems often need this layer before modern marketing connectors can work with them.

A practical example

Label: hypothetical. A company's legacy CRM only exposes a SOAP interface.

A middleware layer translates incoming REST requests from the marketing platform into SOAP calls, and translates responses back, so the connector can sync contacts without touching the CRM itself.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Does the translation layer support the specific protocol versions your legacy system uses?
  • What latency and rate limits does the translation layer add per call?
  • How are faults mapped between protocols, for example SOAP faults to HTTP error codes?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Translation layers add a moving part that can fail and must be monitored; plan for its maintenance, not just its setup.
