Queue Drain Strategy

A queue drain strategy is the policy for recovering after an outage or bulk import floods the event queue: in what order and at what rate pending events are processed, and whether stale events should be discarded rather than executed.

It differs from backpressure, which governs overload as it happens; drain strategy governs the recovery phase. Default behavior is usually first-in-first-out, which is not always the right order.

A practical example

Example: after a two-hour outage, 200,000 events are pending, including two-day-old abandoned-cart signals and outdated lifecycle-stage changes. A drain policy might prioritize new leads, discard cart events older than a threshold, and throttle the rest.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether prioritization rules and discard thresholds are configurable.
  • Test the observed processing rate during a backlog and whether it can be throttled.
  • Check whether discarded events are logged for audit.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Discarding stale events avoids wrong-time messages but permanently drops signals, so thresholds need business sign-off.
