REST API

REST (Representational State Transfer) is a widely used API style where systems expose resources, such as contacts or deals, at predictable URLs that clients read and modify with standard HTTP methods like GET, POST and PUT.

A platform's REST API defines what you can build beyond its prebuilt connectors: custom apps, internal tools or data pipelines.

A practical example

Example: if your warehouse team needs to update contact records from an internal inventory tool, a well-documented REST API lets you write that integration directly instead of waiting for a vendor connector.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Review the API documentation for completeness: authentication, error codes, pagination and rate limits should all be documented.
  • Confirm whether every object you need is exposed via the API or only a subset.
  • Ask about API versioning policy and how breaking changes are communicated to integrators.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A REST API shifts maintenance burden to your team; anything you build yourself must be maintained when the vendor changes behavior.
