Sync Checkpointing

Sync checkpointing is the mechanism that persists progress markers during a large sync, so a crashed run resumes from the last committed batch instead of restarting or silently skipping records.

Where sync recovery describes the general repair process, checkpointing is the specific design that determines whether a mid-run failure costs minutes or a full re-run.

A practical example

Example: a nightly CRM-to-platform sync of 50,000 contacts fails at record 31,000 due to a timeout.

With checkpointing, the retry continues from the last committed batch of 500; without it, the job restarts from zero and risks duplicating the 31,000 already written.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether sync jobs persist progress and resume from the last committed batch.
  • Check how already-written records are identified on retry to avoid duplicates.
  • Confirm checkpoint granularity — per record, per batch — and whether it is configurable.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: frequent checkpoints slow the sync with extra writes, and resuming assumes source data has not changed mid-run — records edited between crash and resume may still need reconciliation.
