Sync Validation

Sync validation is the per-run verification step performed after a sync completes: checking that record counts, field values, and relationships actually match the source.

It differs from data reconciliation, the broader audit practice, by being an automated check attached to each run. Its job is catching truncation, mapping errors, and partial failures that a sync reports as successful.

A practical example

Example: a nightly CRM sync reports success, but validation finds 312 records missing a lifecycle stage due to a field-mapping change; the team patches the mapping before scoring runs.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform runs automated post-sync checks or whether validation is manual.
  • Verify checks cover counts, sampled field values, and relationship integrity, not just totals.
  • Confirm failed validation triggers an alert and blocks dependent processes like scoring.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Validation adds runtime to each sync and sampled checks can miss rare divergences, so critical fields may need full-population checks while the rest rely on sampling.
