Workflow Concurrency

Workflow concurrency is a platform-level policy governing whether a single contact can occupy two branches of the same workflow simultaneously. It covers re-entry rules, branch exclusivity, and merge behavior when parallel paths converge.

Without an explicit policy, a contact hitting two triggers at once may receive contradictory lifecycle-stage updates or duplicate messages.

A practical example

Example: a contact submits a demo form and opens a pricing email within the same minute.

If both triggers enroll them into different branches of one nurture workflow, the concurrency policy determines whether both branches run, one wins, or the second enrollment is blocked.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether branch exclusivity is configurable per workflow or fixed platform-wide.
  • Test what happens when two triggers fire in the same second for one contact.
  • Confirm how parallel branches behave at a merge point: first-finish, wait-for-all, or last-write-wins.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tighter exclusivity reduces conflicts but can silently block legitimate enrollments, so review blocked-entry logs regularly.
