Workflow Debugging

Workflow debugging is the practice and toolset for diagnosing why an automation didn't fire, fired twice, or took the wrong branch — before and after launch.

It spans sandbox test modes, dry runs with a single contact, condition evaluators, and how errors are surfaced.

It differs from execution traces, which show what happened for one record; debugging is the broader capability for finding logic problems.

A practical example

Example: before launching a lead-routing flow, a builder runs it in test mode with one dummy contact, watches each condition evaluate, and catches a typo in a field comparison that would have misrouted every lead.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform offers a test mode that runs the real logic without production side effects.
  • Test whether you can step through conditions for a single contact interactively.
  • Check how errors are surfaced: dashboards, alerts, or silent failure.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Test modes often simulate timing differently from production, so wait-based behavior still needs validation after launch.
