Bidirectional Sync

Bidirectional sync is an integration pattern in which data flows both ways between two systems, so a change in either one is reflected in the other.

It is a common buyer requirement, for example keeping a CRM and a marketing platform aligned on contact status.

The hard part is conflict handling: when the same record changes in both systems between sync runs, the platform needs a rule for which value wins, and buyers should understand that rule before committing.

A practical example

Example: a contact is marked unsubscribed in your email tool and simultaneously updated with a new job title in your CRM.

A bidirectional sync with a defined conflict rule applies both changes where they do not collide and resolves the collision according to the configured policy.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the platform resolves conflicts when the same field changes in both systems.
  • Confirm whether sync direction and field mappings are configurable per field, not just per object.
  • Check whether there is a sync log showing each change, its direction, and its source.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Bidirectional sync can create feedback loops where each system re-triggers the other's updates; without loop detection and field-level control, two-way sync amplifies data errors instead of fixing them.
