Callback URL

A callback URL is the specific endpoint address you register so another system knows where to deliver asynchronous responses or event notifications.

When a payment processor, CRM, or form service finishes processing, it sends the result to that URL rather than making you poll for it.

A practical example

Example: a team registers a callback URL pointing to their marketing platform's listener endpoint so CRM status changes, such as opportunity won or lost, arrive as events instead of requiring hourly manual refreshes.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform provides a stable, documented endpoint for receiving events, or whether you must build and host one.
  • Check what verification the receiving side performs, such as signature validation, to reject spoofed deliveries.
  • Confirm how failures are handled: are missed events retried, logged, or silently dropped?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Callback URLs create an inbound dependency: if your endpoint domain changes or a firewall blocks the sender, events stop arriving with no error on your side until someone checks.
