Connector Authentication

Connector authentication is the credential setup a prebuilt connector uses to establish trusted access to a target application.

It may rely on OAuth, API keys, or service accounts, and it determines which permissions the connector can exercise inside that app.

A practical example

Example: during a Marketo-to-warehouse setup, the admin grants the connector a read-only OAuth scope, so the integration can pull activity data but never modify records.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm which authentication methods each connector supports and whether your security team approves them.
  • Check how scopes and permissions are configured, and whether least-privilege access is practical.
  • Ask how credential expiry and rotation are handled, and what alerts appear when tokens fail.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Expired credentials, missing permissions or required administrator approvals can delay connector setup. Successful authentication does not by itself confirm that the connector has the right permissions for every intended operation.
