Payload Correlation

Payload correlation is the practice of linking related messages across asynchronous integrations by carrying a shared identifier, often called a correlation ID, in both the request and the response.

When processing is asynchronous, the reply may arrive seconds or minutes later through a different channel, and the identifier is what lets the receiving system match it to the original record or job.

A practical example

Example: your platform sends a lead's email to an enrichment service and receives the result via webhook minutes later.

A correlation ID embedded in both messages lets the listener attach the returned job title to the correct lead instead of guessing.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform lets you inject a custom identifier into outbound requests and read it back in responses.
  • Check how the system handles responses that arrive without a matching ID: are they logged, quarantined or discarded?
  • Confirm that correlation IDs are unique per request and persist long enough for slow responses.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Correlation only links messages; it does not prevent duplicates. A repeated response with the same ID still needs separate duplicate handling at the receiver.
