Payload Inspection

Payload Inspection is the manual practice of examining the actual message content a webhook or API call delivered, rather than trusting the receiving system's interpretation.

It is a debugging activity on message content, distinct from automated payload validation, which enforces rules without human review. Inspection reveals what the sender really sent.

A practical example

Label: hypothetical. Leads arrive at the CRM with an empty job title field.

An operator inspects the raw webhook payloads and finds the sender renamed the field from job_title to role, so the mapping silently stopped matching.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can you view raw payloads in a log or replay tool, not just processed records?
  • Are payloads retained long enough to investigate issues reported days later?
  • Can sensitive fields be masked during inspection to protect personal data?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Payloads often contain personal data, so inspection access needs controls and should follow your data protection rules.
