Event Correlation

Event correlation is the runtime linkage of discrete events to a person's identity and to each other — by session, campaign or journey — so automations and attribution see a coherent sequence.

It differs from identity resolution, which merges records into one identity; correlation connects the stream of activity to that identity, including events that happened before the person was known.

A practical example

Example: an anonymous visitor views three pricing pages, then fills a form from a different device. Correlation determines whether the pre-identification page views join the now-known contact's journey or remain orphaned events.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which correlation keys are used across devices and how they are established.
  • Test whether pre-identification events attach to the record after a known conversion.
  • Check how session boundaries are defined when activity spans hours or channels.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Correlation depends on cookies and device identifiers that degrade with privacy restrictions, so historical linkage is never guaranteed.
