A practical example
Example: your CRM says an account belongs to rep A, your marketing platform says rep B, and your attribution tool shows a third owner.
If the CRM is the declared SSOT for account ownership, the other systems sync from it and dashboards stop contradicting each other.
What to evaluate before investing
- Ask each vendor which objects it can serve as system of record for, and which it only mirrors.
- Test bidirectional sync behavior: when a conflict occurs, which field value survives and is there an audit log?
- Confirm whether field-level or object-level SSOT designation is supported, since teams often split authority by domain.
Limitations and tradeoffs
An SSOT is a governance commitment, not a feature toggle: without enforced sync rules and ownership policies, tools will keep drifting apart.
