Audience Segmentation

Audience segmentation is the definition of reusable groups of people, built from shared attributes or behaviors, that can be applied across marketing channels: email, ads, website, lifecycle messaging.

Unlike email segmentation, which is scoped to sends, an audience is typically a persistent object that other tools and campaigns reference.

A practical example

Example: a company defines an audience of 'trial users with no login in 7 days' once, then uses it for a re-engagement email, a retargeting ad set, and an in-app message, keeping criteria consistent everywhere.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether audiences sync to external ad platforms and how often, and what happens when membership changes mid-campaign.
  • Check whether one audience definition can be reused across tools in the suite or must be duplicated per channel.
  • Verify how audience size and membership history are reported, so you can see growth, churn and overlap between audiences.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Shared audiences create coupling: a criteria change intended for email can silently alter ad targeting or lifecycle messaging, so changes need review and versioning rather than ad-hoc edits.
