Behavioral Segmentation

Behavioral segmentation groups contacts by actions they have taken: pages viewed, emails opened, features used, purchases, sessions. It contrasts with demographic or firmographic segmentation, which uses static attributes.

Because behavior changes over time, these segments are usually dynamic, recalculating as event data arrives.

A practical example

Example: a team builds a segment of 'viewed the pricing page twice in 14 days but never requested a demo' and routes it to a nurture track with pricing objection content, while firmographic data stays unchanged.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm which events the platform captures natively and whether custom events can be defined without engineering work.
  • Ask how far back event history is retained, since behavioral rules often need lookback windows of weeks or months.
  • Test whether segment membership recalculates in near real time or on a batch schedule, and how that affects trigger timing.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Behavioral segments are only as reliable as event tracking: missing tags, ad blockers and identity gaps create blind spots, so a tracking plan and regular audits are prerequisites, not optional extras.
