Behavioral Targeting

Behavioral targeting is the delivery tactic of choosing who receives a message, ad or experience based on their observed actions, rather than static attributes.

It sits downstream of behavioral segmentation: segmentation defines the group, targeting decides when and where that group gets reached, often through triggered sends or ad audiences.

A practical example

Example: after a contact abandons a checkout or a demo booking form, a triggered email goes out within an hour, and the contact is added to a retargeting audience for the following week.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which trigger events are supported out of the box and what latency exists between event and delivery.
  • Check frequency and suppression controls: can you cap how many triggered messages one person receives across campaigns?
  • Verify consent and preference handling for behavior-based delivery, including regional rules and opt-out propagation across channels.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Behavioral targeting can feel intrusive when triggers fire too fast or too often; without frequency caps and clear consent framing, it tends to raise unsubscribe and complaint rates, so restraint settings deserve as much scrutiny as trigger capabilities.
