Campaign Targeting

Campaign targeting is the practice of deciding which audience receives which campaign, based on criteria like firmographics, lifecycle stage, behavior, or engagement history.

In B2B, targeting often operates at both the account and the individual contact level, which makes segment logic more complex than in consumer marketing.

A practical example

Example: a webinar promotion targets contacts at accounts in the manufacturing industry with over 500 employees who visited the pricing page in the last 30 days, excluding anyone already in an active sales sequence.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Test how the platform combines account-level and contact-level filters in a single segment definition.
  • Check whether segments update in near real time as contact behavior changes, or only on a scheduled refresh.
  • Ask how exclusions and suppression lists are handled across concurrent campaigns to avoid conflicting messages.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Overly narrow segments reduce waste but shrink reach and can make results statistically hard to interpret; broader segments do the opposite, so precision is a tradeoff, not a pure win.
