Behavioral Analytics

Behavioral analytics is the analysis of event-level data to understand how people move through journeys: which paths lead to conversion, where users drop off, and which actions correlate with outcomes.

It differs from behavioral targeting, which acts on behavior; analytics interprets it and informs what to build next.

A practical example

Example: a team analyzes funnel steps from first visit to demo request, finds that visitors who read two specific comparison pages convert at visibly higher rates, and prioritizes content updates for those pages.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether analysis is limited to prebuilt reports or supports custom funnels, cohorts and path exploration on your own events.
  • Check data access: can you export raw events or query them directly, or are you confined to the vendor's dashboards?
  • Verify how identity resolution joins anonymous and known sessions, since broken identity distorts every journey metric.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Behavioral analytics shows correlation within your tracked events, not causation; a segment that converts well may simply reflect intent that existed before any campaign touched it, so interpretation needs experimentation or careful reasoning.
