Feature Usage Analytics

Feature usage analytics measures how often and how deeply users interact with specific functions inside a software product, such as reports run, workflows triggered, or records edited.

In a B2B buying context it serves two purposes: vendors use it to understand their customers, and buyers can apply the same lens internally to judge whether a platform they already pay for is genuinely adopted or shelfware.

A practical example

Example: a revenue team licenses a sales engagement suite and discovers that only 12 of 60 reps opened the sequencing module in a quarter, while call logging is used daily.

That gap reshapes the renewal conversation.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the tool tracks adoption: per-user, per-feature, and per-role event data, not just logins.
  • Verify you can export or API-access usage data for your own internal adoption reviews.
  • Test whether dashboards distinguish active usage from passive sessions or background automation.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Usage volume is not the same as value; heavily used features can still be low-impact, so pair usage data with outcome metrics.
