Content Decay

Content decay is the gradual decline in performance of published content: rankings slip, organic sessions fall, and conversion events drop as material ages, competitors publish fresher alternatives, or search intent shifts.

It is a diagnostic concept, not a single metric; teams usually track it by comparing period-over-period performance per URL or topic cluster.

A practical example

Example: a 2022 comparison guide that once drove steady demo requests slips to page two after a competitor publishes an updated version, and its monthly leads fall by half over two quarters.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Does the platform surface per-URL trend data over time, not just aggregate site traffic?
  • Can you segment decayed pages by funnel stage so high-intent assets get flagged first?
  • Does it connect decay signals to downstream outcomes like MQLs, not just sessions?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Short-term dips can reflect seasonality, algorithm updates, or tracking changes rather than true decay, so confirm the trend across several periods before committing budget to rewrites.
