Content Funnel

A content funnel is a planning model that assigns content to stages of the buyer journey: awareness content answers broad problems, consideration content compares approaches, and decision content supports vendor evaluation.

Mapping assets to stages exposes where the journey lacks material and helps route readers toward the next step.

A practical example

Example: an analytics vendor maps its library and finds ten awareness-level explainers but only one comparison page for buyers evaluating options, so it prioritizes decision-stage content for the next cycle.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool lets you tag assets by funnel stage and report coverage and performance per stage.
  • Ask if it supports mapping calls to action per stage so awareness readers are not pushed straight to demo requests.
  • Confirm it can surface underperforming stage transitions, such as high traffic on top-of-funnel pages with few moves to consideration content.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Stage labels are approximations; B2B buyers skip stages and revisit earlier ones, so rigid funnel rules can push the wrong content at the wrong moment.
