Content Governance

Content governance is the set of policies, roles, and workflows that keep published content accurate, consistent, and compliant over time: style standards, factual review requirements, approval chains, ownership assignments, and retention or archive rules.

It matters most in regulated industries and in teams where many contributors publish across many properties.

A practical example

Example: a fintech marketer requires every product-claims page to pass a compliance review step, carry a named owner, and be re-reviewed within twelve months before it can stay live.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Does the platform support role-based approvals and audit trails showing who changed what and when?
  • Can you attach review deadlines or expiry dates to assets so stale content is flagged automatically?
  • Does it enforce templates or terminology rules at the point of editing, not just in a separate style guide?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Heavy governance slows publishing; calibrate review depth to risk, applying strict chains to claims and regulated topics while letting low-risk formats like social posts move through lighter checks.
