CTA Acceptance Criteria

CTA acceptance criteria are the written minimum requirements a call-to-action must meet before it counts as launch-ready: a defined destination URL, working tracking parameters, segment or audience rules, and accessibility basics.

They are the requirements document itself, distinct from the QA gate, which is the executable sign-off process that checks work against these criteria.

Because the criteria are owned and versioned separately, launch disputes reference documented standards instead of opinions.

A practical example

Example: a criteria sheet requires every CTA to list its destination, UTM parameters, target segment, fallback behavior for logged-out users, and mobile rendering check before a reviewer approves it.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the criteria are versioned and dated, so reviewers know which edition a launch was checked against.
  • Check that each requirement is testable in one pass, for example a reachable destination rather than a vague quality statement.
  • Verify the criteria cover tracking validation, not just visual and copy review.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Criteria only help if the sign-off process actually enforces them; a document nobody checks at launch adds maintenance cost without preventing broken CTAs.
