Email Lifecycle

Email lifecycle is a practical label for structuring email programs around the stages of a contact's relationship with your company: welcome, onboarding, engagement, re-engagement, and win-back or offboarding.

Each stage has its own goal, cadence, and exit criteria, and contacts move between stages based on behavior or status changes rather than one-off campaign sends.

A practical example

Example: a fintech tool runs a welcome series for new signups, moves silent users into a re-engagement track after 45 days of inactivity, and graduates engaged users into feature-education emails, with each transition triggered automatically.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether contacts can hold a lifecycle stage or status that governs which emails they receive.
  • Verify stage transitions can be triggered by inactivity periods, engagement scores, or CRM field changes.
  • Test whether a contact can be excluded from one stage's sends while active in another without manual list edits.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Lifecycle email only works if stage definitions are agreed across marketing and sales; without shared definitions, contacts receive contradictory messages from competing sequences.
