Form Attribution Gap

A form attribution gap is the loss of source data between a visitor filling a form and the resulting CRM or automation record.

Common causes include hidden UTM fields that never populate, forms embedded in iframes that strip referrer context, and progressive profiling that overwrites the original source with a later touch.

The gap is distinct from broader click-to-record breaks because it isolates the form layer itself.

A practical example

Example: a prospect clicks a paid ad, completes an embedded demo-request form, and the CRM record shows direct traffic because the iframe dropped the referrer and the hidden UTM field stayed empty.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Submit a test form from a UTM-tagged URL and verify every hidden field reaches the CRM record.
  • Check whether forms are embedded in iframes or third-party widgets, and confirm referrer and cookie data survive.
  • Review progressive profiling settings to confirm later submissions never overwrite the first-touch source field.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Fixing the form layer does not guarantee attribution accuracy; connector and CRM mapping errors can still corrupt data downstream, so each layer needs its own test.
