Landing Page Engagement

Landing page engagement describes how actively visitors interact with a landing page, measured through behaviors such as scroll depth, time on page, video plays, form field focus, and clicks on interactive elements.

Unlike conversion rate, which counts completed goal events, engagement describes the quality and depth of interaction regardless of whether a conversion occurs.

Note that exact definitions of engagement and bounce vary by tool, so compare what each platform actually measures.

It is useful for diagnosing pages: high traffic with shallow engagement suggests a message or traffic-source mismatch, while strong engagement with low conversion may point to friction in the form or offer itself.

A practical example

Example: two landing pages get similar traffic. Page A shows 70 percent of visitors leaving without scrolling; Page B shows most visitors reaching the pricing section but abandoning the form. The diagnoses, and fixes, differ.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Verify the tool captures scroll depth and element-level interaction, not just sessions and bounce rate.
  • Check whether engagement data can be segmented by traffic source and campaign.
  • Confirm you can set engagement thresholds that trigger automation, such as a re-engagement email.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: engagement metrics are directional, not proof of intent; heavy tracking scripts can also slow pages and degrade the experience they measure.
