Middle of Funnel (MOFU)

Middle of Funnel (MOFU) is the stage where prospects acknowledge a problem and start evaluating approaches, but are not yet comparing specific vendors.

Typical MOFU assets include webinars, comparison guides by category, case studies, and calculators, usually gated to capture lead data.

In automation, MOFU is where lead scoring, segmentation, and multi-step nurture sequences do most of their work.

The practical test of MOFU quality is whether engagement predicts progression: contacts who consume these assets should move toward sales conversations at a measurably higher rate than those who do not.

A practical example

Example: a contact who attends a webinar on workflow automation and later opens a buyer's checklist is enrolled in a three-email sequence that offers a self-assessment, then a demo invitation if the assessment score crosses your threshold.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the tool score multiple MOFU behaviors (webinar attendance, guide downloads) with configurable weights?
  • Does it support branching nurture paths by segment or persona, not just one linear drip?
  • Can you see which MOFU assets correlate with later sales-accepted leads in reporting?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Gating MOFU content boosts lead capture but suppresses reach and can inflate scores with low-intent downloads; balance form friction against data quality.
