Scroll Depth Tracking

Scroll Depth Tracking records how far down a page a visitor scrolls, typically reported as thresholds such as 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, or as the deepest point reached.

It is a more honest consumption signal than time on page, because it shows whether people actually reach the call to action or the key section.

It is usually implemented through analytics event tags or built into modern analytics platforms.

For marketing automation buyers, the practical value is using scroll thresholds as triggers or audience conditions, for example adding a lead to a nurture sequence only after they have read most of a key article.

The main tradeoff is that scroll percentage depends on page length and layout, so a short page inflates apparent depth.

A practical example

Example: a 3,000-word guide shows that only 30% of readers reach the 75% mark where the demo invitation sits; the team moves the invitation higher and compares reach in the next period.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the tool reports scroll thresholds as events you can use in segments or automation triggers.
  • Check whether thresholds are configurable rather than fixed at default percentages.
  • Verify scroll events are captured on both mobile and desktop with consistent definitions.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Scroll depth measures movement, not comprehension; fast flicking to the bottom can register as 100% while the reader absorbed little, so combine it with clicks and conversions.
