Glossary / Evaluation and implementation guide

Campaign Tracking

Campaign tracking is the technical implementation that records campaign exposure and response: UTM parameters on links, tracking codes on landing pages, form-to-source mapping in the CRM, and event capture for later funnel stages.

It is the data-collection layer that measurement and reporting depend on, and it fails silently when inconsistent.

A practical example

Example: a team standardizes a UTM convention (source, medium, campaign, content) across agencies, then maps each landing page form to its campaign in the CRM so every lead carries its origin automatically.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Review whether the tool enforces or validates UTM naming conventions, or whether typos will fragment your data.
  • Verify offline conversions (calls, closed deals) can be pushed back so tracking covers the full funnel, not just clicks.
  • Check how the system handles redirects, link shorteners and cross-domain navigation without losing parameters.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tracking is fragile by nature: ad blockers, cookie restrictions and platform privacy changes reduce coverage. Design processes to tolerate gaps rather than assuming every interaction will be captured perfectly.
