Top of Funnel (TOFU)

Top of Funnel (TOFU) is the earliest stage, aimed at audiences who may not yet recognize a problem or know your category exists.

TOFU work is educational and broad: blog posts, short videos, social content, and paid reach campaigns. Its output is not pipeline but attention and first-party data you can nurture later.

Because TOFU results are indirect, teams often over- or under-invest in it; the discipline is defining what a successful TOFU program should produce, such as subscriber growth or branded search volume, and connecting those outputs to later funnel stages without claiming direct causation.

A practical example

Example: a series of explainer articles on a niche workflow problem attracts newsletter subscribers; months later, some of those subscribers enter a MOFU nurture sequence after downloading a comparison guide.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the platform attribute TOFU content to later conversions using multi-touch models, and does it explain each model's assumptions?
  • Does it connect organic channels (blog, social, email) with paid campaigns in one reporting view?
  • Can you set TOFU goals like subscriber growth and track them separately from pipeline metrics?

Limitations and tradeoffs

TOFU impact is hard to attribute directly; multi-touch models show association, not proof that a specific article caused a sale, so treat TOFU reporting as directional.
