A practical example
Label as example: an imported account whose domain matches an existing customer's domain is assigned to that customer's current owner; a new account under a known corporate parent inherits the parent's team; everything unmatched falls to a named default queue for review.
What to evaluate before investing
- Ask which matching keys the platform supports — exact domain, email pattern, hierarchy parent, custom ID — and how conflicts between rules are prioritized.
- Check whether reassignment of an existing account triggers notifications and preserves activity history under the new owner.
- Verify that list imports and CRM syncs apply the same assignment rules as web-created records, or that differences are documented.
Limitations and tradeoffs
Deterministic rules are only as good as their match keys: fuzzy domain matching can hand an account to the wrong owner, and misassignment is sticky — the wrong owner suppresses outreach and corrupts ABM plays.
The tradeoff is automated speed versus a review step for ambiguous matches.
