Account Ownership

Account Ownership defines which single team or rep is the owner of record for an account at each lifecycle stage, and how ownership changes at conversion.

It covers pre-pipeline stages—where marketing may own the account—plus the transfer rules that apply when an account converts to an opportunity or customer.

It differs from Opportunity Ownership, which is deal-level, and Territory Management, which slices geography; ownership here is the account-level record that territories and deals hang off.

Ambiguous ownership is a top cause of duplicate outreach and dropped accounts.

A practical example

Example: a RevOps team sets rules: marketing owns accounts until they hit an intent threshold, ownership then transfers to the named AE, and customer accounts transfer to CS at onboarding—each transfer automated with notification to both parties.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the CRM enforces a single owner-of-record field per account and logs ownership change history.
  • Check if transfer rules can be automated on lifecycle events (lead conversion, deal creation) with notifications.
  • Test how the tool handles conflicts: what happens when two reps claim the same account, and is there an approval path?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Strict single-ownership simplifies accountability but can starve collaborative accounts; some teams need co-ownership models the CRM must be configured to support.
