Closed Won Handoff

Closed won handoff is the structured transfer of a signed deal from sales to the team that delivers it, such as onboarding, customer success or implementation.

A complete handoff carries the commercial record, commitments made during the sale, technical requirements, key contacts and timeline, in a format the receiving team can act on.

It differs from simple CRM stage movement: the value is in the packaged context, not the status change.

A practical example

Example: when a software deal closes, the account executive submits a handoff record listing promised integrations, the go-live target, the champion and the economic buyer, so onboarding schedules a kickoff without re-asking the customer anything.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how handoff data is captured: a dedicated object or template in the CRM, or scattered across notes, emails and calls.
  • Verify the tool can trigger downstream actions on handoff, such as creating an onboarding project, notifying the delivery team or starting a checklist.
  • Check whether both sales and delivery teams can see and comment on the handoff record, so gaps surface before kickoff.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Over-templated handoffs create checkbox compliance: reps may fill fields without real detail, so keep required inputs few, meaningful and reviewed by the receiving team.
