Sales Handoff

A sales handoff is the structured transfer of a qualified lead or active account from one team to another, typically from marketing or SDRs to account executives.

A working handoff defines acceptance criteria, required context (source, engagement history, qualification notes), a response window, and what happens when the receiving side rejects or ignores the lead.

A practical example

Example: an SDR books a meeting and the handoff record includes the lead's source campaign, key objections raised, and agreed next step, so the account executive opens the first call without re-qualifying from scratch.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the platform supports explicit accept/reject states with reasons, not just silent record reassignment.
  • Confirm context fields transfer automatically from marketing automation and call tools, rather than relying on manual copy-paste.
  • Verify you can set and measure a response-time expectation for the receiving rep or queue.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Automating handoff routing does not fix misaligned qualification definitions; marketing and sales must agree on what 'ready' means first.
