Customer Health Score

A customer health score is a composite indicator that ranks accounts by their likelihood to renew, expand, or churn, built from weighted signals such as product usage, support ticket trends, invoice payment behavior, NPS or CSAT responses, and contract stage.

Scores are usually banded (green, amber, red) so customer success teams can prioritize outreach.

The score's value depends entirely on whether its inputs actually correlate with retention in your business, which must be validated rather than assumed.

A practical example

Example: an account turns amber after weekly logins drop, two support tickets escalate, and its renewal enters the 90-day window, prompting the success manager to schedule a business review.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can you choose and weight the input signals yourself, or are you locked into the vendor's fixed proprietary formula?
  • Does the tool let you back-test the score against past churn outcomes to see whether it would have flagged accounts that actually left?
  • Can score changes trigger workflows—alerts, tasks, playbooks—rather than only displaying a color in a dashboard?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Health scores are directional indicators, not predictions; a green score can create false confidence, and weights set once go stale as your product and customer base change.
