Opportunity Hygiene

Opportunity hygiene is the ongoing practice of keeping deal records accurate: correct stages, filled mandatory fields, realistic close dates, active next steps, and removal of dead records.

It is usually enforced through validation rules, automated nudges, and manager reviews rather than relying on rep memory.

A practical example

Example: a sales ops lead configures a weekly rule that flags any open opportunity with a close date in the past or no logged activity in 21 days.

Managers get a short exception list each Monday instead of reviewing 300 records manually.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform can enforce field completion at stage changes, or only warn after the fact.
  • Check for automated detection of stale deals based on activity data, not just manual flags.
  • Confirm hygiene reports can be filtered by team and rep so accountability is specific, not diffuse.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Overly strict validation rules push reps to enter placeholder data just to advance a deal, which can degrade data quality more than loose rules do.
