Opportunity Status Map

An Opportunity Status Map defines the allowed deal statuses beyond progression stages — open, pending, slipped, closed-won, closed-lost — plus the permitted transitions between them and who may make each change.

Status is orthogonal to stage: a deal can sit in a late stage yet be slipped past its close date.

Slipped and pending statuses drive forecast categories and reporting, so inconsistent definitions across tools silently break rollups. A map gives every system and team one shared vocabulary for deal state.

A practical example

A team defines that slipped means the close date moved at least once past the original date with buyer confirmation, and only managers may set it.

When the BI tool maps slipped deals to an at-risk forecast category, both systems count the same set.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can statuses and permitted transitions be configured per pipeline, with role-based restrictions on who sets each status?
  • Does the platform provide a standard mapping from statuses to forecast categories that external tools can consume?
  • Are status changes logged with actor and reason, especially for slipped and reopened deals?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Statuses mean different things in different CRMs and BI tools out of the box; a map only helps if every connected system adopts the same definitions.
