Sales Operations

Sales operations (often abbreviated RevOps when merged with marketing and customer success operations) is the function that designs and maintains the systems a sales team runs on: pipeline definitions, CRM data standards, territory and quota administration, forecasting process, and the tool stack.

It is a discipline with processes and metrics, not merely CRM administration.

A practical example

Example: a sales operations lead standardizes stage exit criteria across three regions, which makes forecast reviews comparable and reduces debates about whether a deal is genuinely at contract stage.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether a platform lets you codify stage definitions and required fields, so process rules live in the system rather than in documents.
  • Confirm it can report on data hygiene, such as records missing close dates or stuck deals, without custom development.
  • Verify admin-level controls so process changes are versioned and auditable across teams.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tooling cannot substitute for an owner; automation layered on undefined processes usually multiplies inconsistency instead of reducing it.
