Sales Playbook

A sales playbook is a documented collection of repeatable plays: which segments to target, which messaging to use, which steps a rep follows for a given deal type, and which assets support each step.

In automation contexts, the term also covers executable playbooks, where steps are triggered and tracked in software rather than read from a PDF.

A practical example

Example: a 'competitive displacement' play specifies trigger conditions (incumbent vendor named in CRM), a talk track, a proof resource, and required next steps, all attached to matching opportunities automatically.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether plays can be attached to opportunities or accounts by condition, so reps see the relevant play without searching.
  • Confirm step completion is tracked and reportable, distinguishing plays that are followed from plays that are merely documented.
  • Verify content assets can be versioned centrally so outdated decks do not circulate.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A playbook codifies current best practice; if the underlying sales motion is unproven, automating it locks in an untested process.
