Sales Playbooks

In buying evaluations, Sales Playbooks refers to a structured library of discrete plays — each with a trigger, ordered steps, linked content, and exit criteria — plus tracking of how often each play runs and what happens after.

This differs from a single strategy document: each play is an operational unit a rep can launch, follow, and report on, so usage and outcomes can be analyzed per play.

A practical example

Example: a 'champion left' play triggers when a key contact changes jobs; it queues steps to re-map the buying committee, sends re-engagement content, and exits when a new champion confirms a meeting.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm plays can be triggered automatically by CRM or intent signals, not only launched manually.
  • Check whether each play records completion of steps and a defined exit state in the CRM.
  • Verify you can compare win or progression rates between accounts where a play ran and where it did not.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: attributing wins to a play shows correlation, not proof the play caused the outcome; treat play metrics as directional.
