Sales Quotas

Sales quotas are assigned performance targets for reps, teams, or territories, usually expressed as revenue, units, or activity volume over a period.

Quota design includes the target type, the measurement period, how credit is split on shared deals, and how attainment is tracked against changes like mid-period territory moves.

A practical example

Example: a team sets quarterly revenue quotas per territory and needs to model what happens to attainment when two accounts move between territories mid-quarter, before announcing the change.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool supports multiple quota types (revenue, units, activity) and per-rep versus per-territory targets.
  • Confirm credit-splitting rules for shared or multi-touch deals are configurable, not hardcoded.
  • Verify attainment can be recalculated for historical periods after territory or account reassignments.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Quota software tracks and models targets; it cannot resolve the political and motivational questions of how fair the targets feel to the team.
